Sheep and fear

I saw something posted on Facebook today about fear and sheep. I modified it slightly to ‘a sheep spends its entire life fearing a wolf will eat it, only to be eaten by the shepherd’.

The thing is, we only die once, yet in the mind, we die thousands of times.

Don’t be a sheep, stay away from the mind and be in the moment, enjoy now, where there is nothing to fear.

Is life worth missing for a Snapchat streak?

Today I had to stop the car to avoid hitting a man standing, not quite in the middle, but in the road updating something on his ‘smartphone’. If I hadn’t have stopped he would have been completely unaware until he woke up in hospital that he’d been run over.

Maybe it was an email that was so important he’d take the risk of being run over, or perhaps he was posting a selfie, updating Facebook, sending a tweet, checking the weather, seeing what had happened in the news ‘man gets run over checking phone, LOL’ or finishing a level of Candy Crush.

Whatever it was, he was potentially risking injury and was completely unaware of his environment. Maybe he spends all his day like that, all his week, the month, perhaps a lifetime in his subconscious. He wouldn’t be alone.

When is he awake? This could be any of us. What do we risk to be unaware and throw away our real lives that is the conscious present moment?

How many people, events, happenings, beautiful moments and so on do we miss in our subconscious state? How many relationships are ruined? Friendships lost? And what do we gain from this dreamlike state?
