Just ‘Google it’…no use your own search engine.

I was sitting yesterday, writing, and a song popped into my head, and just a few lines of the lyrics and I sat thinking, shit what song is that? I knew it was Simon and Garfunkel, yes, I am that old.

My default reaction was, just ‘Google it’.

Then I said ‘don’t be lazy, think for yourself, use your brain’.

Within a moment or two, up came the answer ‘Homeward Bound’, I then ‘Googled’ the song and listened to it on YouTube while I continued to write. Happiness.

Just ‘Google it’ is making me lazy, is not good for my mind and as I am old enough to remember songs like ‘Homeward Bound’, I am old enough to remember BG, before Google, where I had no choice but to think and try and remember.

What the f… will happen to us if we can only do things by relying on technology and not our own minds? Also, where has the fun of challenge gone and all the good skills that will teach us, like patience for a start and sticking with things?

Instant gratification and everything being just a click away are killing us, slowly but surely.

I need to use my own search engine more often and not just ‘Google it’.

My 30 day challenges, day 16 – by Philip Dodson

Today is day 16 and I am writing this on a train at 10:15pm heading home. I had only a sandwich for lunch and then nothing else to eat until I reached London Bridge station at 9.30pm. The temptation to eat crap & chocolate was massive. However, wilful as ever to not give in, I opted for an M&S sarnie and some nuts!

Today’s picture is from an event I attended tonight at Google Campus, organised by my mate Bernie Mitchell, who I found out only today has abandoned me on my ’30 day blog challenge’ to run off with another ’30 day challenger’. Anyway, so it was his #LLBS or Late Late Breakfast Show, which had a line up of some inspiring speakers.

The event kicked off with a rant from Ben, formerly head man of Tech City, who ranted on that the Internet was not for instagram pics of f’ing cats and had a far deeper and more meaningful purpose. There was a short but extremely interesting talk from Liam Black of theSameWavelength.com and a very passionate Lena Robinson, about her new charity idea @give_different, please check out. Finally, I had a great chat with Amanda Singleton of Qustodian, who works in a co-working space that has a cat, with instagrams to prove it, don’t tell Ben.

It was great to listen and to be among people, who want to make a difference and are already making change happen. Yet more evidence, why it has to be ‘goodbye’ to the old school world. Time to create a world of helping, sharing and working together. With a focus on people instead of stuff.

I know it’s a message that I repeat, however, it is worth repeating. The world needs to change. We need to use technology, all the great knowledge and skills that exist to truly change things. To face up to the fact, that excessive and endless consumerism has failed.
